Mr. Marcus was very instrumental, and the driving force, in affecting State legislation and in writing regulations during 1993 that made it possible for Cooperative Housing Corporations to qualify as homeowners under Michigan's Homestead Act.  He provides training to
MAHC and NAHC Regional and National Annual Housing Conference Attendees and is a Consultant to the Michigan Federation of 213 Housing Cooperatives. Ralph serves on the RCM Board of Governors, is Chairman of the Board of NAHC, Co-Chair of NAHC's Governance and Strategic Planning Committee and a member of NAHC's Executive Committee and the Finance Committee. He also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Volunteers of America, Michigan.

NAHC’s Board created this lifetime achievement award in memory of its namesake and a man regarded as NAHC’s founding father. The Jerry Voorhis Award is NAHC’s highest honor, recognizing significant leadership in both theory and practice. Jerry Voorhis, a man of impeccable integrity, believed in, and did his best to teach, apply and widen the use of basic cooperative principles. As it reviews nominee applications, the Membership Services Committee looks for the following characteristics:

Long term commitment to and consistent application of the basic Rochdale principles and practices as applied to housing cooperatives. The Rochdale principles were included in the original Bylaws, and continue to be an NAHC Bylaws feature.

Significant candidate activity on a leadership level in both the theory and practice of cooperative housing, either or both on the national organization level and in their home community.

Candidate’s actual experience living and working in a housing cooperative.

Agree that all application materials become the property of the National Association of Housing Cooperatives and may be used in print and other media.

Ralph Marcus was the recipient of the Jerry Voorhis Memorial Award at the NAHC 2017 Conference.
